  • Description: Petralona Cave. It is situated at the foothills of Mount Katsika, where a human skull dating to 600 000 BC was unearthed. The skull which belonged to a woman, aged approximately 25, provided evidence of an earlier species of man, the Archanthrope, which constituted the transition from Homo erectus to Homo sapiens. The cave also yielded animal bones (belonging to cave bears, hyenas, lions, rhinoceroses, deer, etc.) The stalactites and stalagmites contained in the cave are also of considerable interest.
